| JAZZ as Vietnamese Music Like
Quyen Van Minh I am in my 40's, but I was born in Japan and he
was born in Vietnam. Even though we are in the same generation
our early lives were very different. Impressed by the work of
such photographers as Kyoichi Sawada, I felt the need to go to
Vietnam to discover what was happening in the world. In reality
I was too young to be involved and was forced to remain an onlooker.
Minh, by contrast was in the middle of the real war. Ironically,
he became fascinated by the American jazz he heard on the US Army's
radio programs. Minh had the willpower and single mindedness to
become a professional jazz player under difficult circumstances
- from the time that jazz was the "enemy's music" to the time
Vietnam became a socialist country. Not only does Minh play a
leading role in the world of Vietnamese jazz, but he also respects
his fellow musicians in other traditions. Minh has worked to fuse
jazz and traditional music in his compositions - successfully
overcoming the difficulties of mixing such different art forms.
Although he is keen to play for all the world's people, his first
priority remains his Vietnamese audience. This is because he understands
that jazz is strongly connected with spiritual freedom. Quyen
Van Minh loves his home country and continues to enrich the Vietnamese
music scene. Hiroki Koichi's Website www.hirokimusic.com |
